BART BAXTER
About the Artist

Bart Baxter has been drawing the rock formations in the desert for many years. He attended art school at Boise State University, and he has a BA from the University of Texas at Austin.
In 2009 he left his Captain's seat at Alaska Airlines and went to fly internationally, first for Jet Airways in Mumbai and then for Ethiopian Airlines in Addis Abeba. In 2011 he became the personal pilot of a high net worth individual, flying a Boeing 737 BBJ out of Stansted north of London. When he returned to the desert in late 2017 he had worked in almost every corner of the world.
His drawings of boulders have won him awards including First Place at the Joshua Tree National Park Art Expo (twice) and Award of Merit at the Artists Council in Palm Desert.
His philosophy of art can be stated simply. When graphic artists first began to show side by side with photographs, it quickly became evident the photograph could be more accurate. To exhibit originality, artists turned to expressionism, minimalism, then full circle, photo-realism. Representational art requires craft, but not at the expense of originality.
Mr. Baxter believes a work of art should be somewhat like a sonnet, in that you have an idea for a poem, but the poem leads you where it wants you to be, much like his drawings, that might start out looking like a particular formation of rocks, but really end up looking like nothing that actually exists in the world.
